Rising Gold Prices and PCB Costs: What You Need to Know

Gold prices have reached record-breaking highs in 2025, surpassing $4,000 per ounce for the first time in history.

For organizations that specify Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold (ENIG) as their PCB surface finish, the rise in gold prices is contributing to a measurable ENIG PCB cost increase. Understanding this impact and exploring alternative finishes can help manufacturers and engineers reduce PCB manufacturing costs without compromising quality or reliability.

Gold Prices Reach Historic Highs

As of mid-October 2025, gold is trading near $4,156.77 per ounce, representing an approximate 56% increase year-over-year. Earlier in the year, prices averaged around $3,300 per ounce, already well above long-term market norms. Because ENIG plating requires a thin layer of real gold, ENIG PCB finishes are directly affected by global gold price fluctuations. These rising material costs are now being reflected in PCB pricing worldwide.

Impact of Gold Price Increases on ENIG PCB Costs (2 μin thickness):

Gold Price (USD/oz) Relative ENIG Cost per m² Change vs. Baseline
$2,600 100% Baseline
$3,300 27% Significant increase
$4,000 54% Sharp rise

The ENIG process only applies to outer layers, not inner layers. This means:

Fewer-layer PCBs (1–2 layers) allocate a larger share of cost to ENIG → more sensitive to gold price changes.

Higher-layer PCBs (4–6 layers) have larger overall cost bases, so the ENIG portion is relatively smaller → less sensitive to gold price fluctuations.

Why ENIG Costs Are Increasing

ENIG continues to be a popular surface finish for high-reliability PCBs, particularly in applications that demand precision and durability. The finish offers:

  • Exceptional surface planarity, ideal for fine-pitch and BGA components
  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Consistent solderability and long-term reliability

However, the immersion gold layer, although extremely thin, is one of the most cost-sensitive materials in the PCB manufacturing process. As gold prices rise, the cost of ENIG PCB fabrication increases proportionally.

For reference, ENIG can already add 20% or more to the total cost of a standard two-layer PCB compared to Lead-Free HASL (LF-HASL). With the gold market reaching all-time highs, that cost gap is expected to widen significantly in the months ahead.

Hard Gold Plating Also Heavily Impacted

Customers who specify hard gold plating, commonly used for edge connectors, contact fingers, and other high-wear areas will see an even greater cost impact.
Unlike ENIG, which uses a thin gold layer for solderability, hard gold requires a much thicker deposit to provide durability and abrasion resistance. As a result, its cost rises sharply with gold’s current market value. Hard gold–plated PCBs are expected to see significant price increases, making selective plating or alternative finishes worth considering.

How to Reduce PCB Manufacturing Costs

While ENIG provides technical advantages for specific applications, it may not be necessary for every PCB design. For products that do not rely heavily on fine-pitch or BGA components, alternative PCB surface finishes can offer comparable performance at a lower cost.

Consider these alternatives:

  • Lead-Free HASL (LF-HASL): A durable and cost-effective PCB surface finish ideal for through-hole and less dense component layouts.
  • OSP (Organic Solderability Preservative): A flat, lead-free finish that provides reliable solderability for certain assembly processes.

By reviewing your design and manufacturing requirements, you may be able to transition from ENIG to LF-HASL or OSP and achieve meaningful cost savings while maintaining product quality.
